As part of this partnership, we’re delighted to bring you the first in our series of ‘Meet the Farmers’ blogs that will introduce you to some of the dedicated producers behind the high-quality British wool we use in our beds. This month we’re meeting Dorset based farmer, Georgie.

Georgie has been shepherding her flock in Shaftesbury for over 20 years, but her dedication to animals started at an early age, as she describes: “My love of animals has been lifelong. Growing up I wanted to be a vet until I found my passion in sheep. My husband and I started out working with a large commercial flock and my shepherding experience goes back 40yrs.”

She focuses solely on committing all of her efforts to breeding the best possible stock of Pedigree Poll Dorset sheep, who graze on Dorset Down land as well as producing excellent quick maturing lambs and superior quality wool for high-end products.

With a dedication to producing the kind of quality wool that will eventually make its way into Hypnos beds and mattresses, her current flock consists of 50 top breeding ewes: the hope is to increase this, hence the recent purchase of two Ram’s of the highest quality and breeding traits that we look for in this flock. As Georgie explains: “For us, it’s not about numbers. It’s about quality and the care and attention we can give our sheep.”

Hugely passionate about the responsibility shepherds have to care for their flock, she’s dedicated to providing the best care for her sheep whilst enjoying every aspect of her job, as she explains: “They trust you and rely on you for everything. You support at a distance, to bring the newborn lamb into the world, and watch them grow, and witness the instant bond with their mother. The ewe and baby are extremely vulnerable, and it’s our duty to keep them safe, to do our absolute best for them. The most enjoyable aspect for me is working outside regardless of the weather and the relationship that has developed between me and the flock - because there most certainly is one.”

It’s clear Georgie is passionate about her flock of sheep and that’s just one of the reasons why her farm is registered as Red Tractor farm-assured. As the UK’s biggest farm and food standards scheme, Red Tractor is a recognisable industry standard by which farmers can be benchmarked and paid a premium price for what they produce. Furthermore, she also works closely with The Woolkeepers® quality assurance platform meaning we’re able to use 100% British wool in our mattresses which is ethically sourced and independently verified.

Georgie adds: “The Red Tractor Standards for wool traceability allows people or businesses that buy my wool to use their logo to promote British wool, which is reassuring for the consumer as they know the farmer in whatever sector has farmed to the high standards and key is animal welfare.”

Hypnos has been part of The Woolkeepers® since 2019 and has supported work to create a community of people at every step of the supply chain in order to build a better way of doing business so that everyone benefits.

The Woolkeepers® sourcing model offers genuine traceability by recording the movement of wool from the animal it has come from, as well as the sustainable production and supply process, right through to the brands that use it in their products.

Every year , as is the tradition, here at A World Of Furniture, we take some of the staff out in to the woods .

Lucy and I have been teaching , guiding and providing ‘Bushcraft experiences’ through our company ‘Countrylore Bushcraft’ for over 15 years. A World of Furniture has at it’s core a deep and well supported empathy for nature and our environment.

We set up ‘Furniture for Trees’ many years ago , dare I say before the trend in environmental awareness began .And have gone on to support many green causes including Project Seagrass and of course Countrylore.

Both Lucy and myself have studied many of the elements which make up Bushcraft and Wilderness Living Skills . The time we spend teaching and immersing folk in nature is very therapeutic for one and all ! It is even more special and enjoyable to have our staff out for the day or days …

This year was as fantastic as ever . We took two groups out over two days. The days were , as always, peppered with banter and great humour. The one thing Lucy and I, have come to understand about spending time in the outdoors and more especially in woodland. Is the amazing restorative effect it has on people. The the woodland aromas, Vistas and sounds all help to both relax and distract our minds and bodies.

Much of what we impart and teach is carried out around campfires under parachutes and in the wild . This year’s groups carved spatulas , made fire by friction, worked on natural awareness , tracking skills and survival strategies. It’s always great fun but there are always key life skills to understand and learn .

The days were finished off with Archery competitions. Two days brought two winners .. Lenn and Barry. Next year we must bring them together for a ‘bow off’ !

As always the company was fantastic, Lucy’s campfire meal was more than delicious and we all got just that bit closer to understanding nature .

A World Of Pine continued to evolve and follow the demands of it’s customers... Thankfully at the ‘millennium’ we were still buying from some fantastic British manufacturers.

New furniture lines and resources heralded the creation of A World Of Furniture . Our most important British manufacturer at that time was Pinetum . A Wiltshire based company which had successfully progressed through pine furniture manufacturing in to the Oak market . Their ideas and designs were ‘cutting edge’ , contemporary and very commercial. Fantastic furniture lines , amazing point of sale and short lead times made for exciting opportunities.

With this new transition , to A World Of Furniture , came more complexity and a more detailed approach to understanding our broadening market and customer base.

With two large stores based in Salisbury and Blandford Forum the company continued to grow . But if I’d left you assuming the evolution from A World Of Pine to A World Of Furniture was seamless then you’ve been misled . The former message had been an ‘outright hit’ .. stack it high and sell it cheap ! Customers leaving with all manners of furniture ‘strapped’ to their cars and their ability to fulfill their furnishings requirements with an immediacy, was still a hit .

Slowly but surely the market altered .. China and Vietnam began undermining the UK manufacturers and more competitors stepped in to the furniture market.

I can remember explaining to a customer that when Lucy and I had first started trading we had a choice of nearly one hundred UK Pine manufacturers and as we entered the second decade of the new millennium the choice was down to less than 10 major ‘players’. The pine manufacturers were in massive decline , oak was the new pine and China was the new furniture manufacturing ‘power base’.

The first major moves towards diversification had started . The stores started the journey from ‘retail warehouses’ to ‘out of town super showrooms’. Wherever possible we sourced furniture from the UK but we became open to the notion of importing more products from Asia.

Looking back now , it’s so obvious that UK furniture manufacturing had run it course and the imports were to flood our supply chain .This ‘revolution’ brought the biggest shift in how we all operated. This shift met or merged with the internet and the world of e-commerce. The shift was ‘super charged’ !

So today we find ourselves looking at very similar ‘objectives’ to those over 25 years ago, although we have a bigger ‘tool box ‘ at our disposal .

Our team firmly believe that our huge array of furniture and accessories need to be seen and appreciated to allow our customers to make the best and most informed decisions. Customers visit the stores in Blandford , Salisbury , Southampton and Poole to experience superb furniture and amazing customer service .

From the earliest days where Lucy and I stacked our furniture in our retail warehouses to today, where we have amazing furniture superstores.

The Journey’s Start

Welcome to our new blog . I hope this content will give our clients and visitors a real insight in to A World Of Furniture ; it’s ‘story’ , the ‘day to day goings ons ‘, philosophies , products and of course our team .

So let’s start right back at the beginning …

Lucy , my wife , and I first met way back in the early Eighties at a ‘party in the woods’.. Six years later we married and started planning for an exciting future together .Both of us had ‘skipped’ the now very conventional University ‘pathway’. Instead we both picked up ‘real life skills’. We quickly realised that we shared an enthusiasm for doing things properly and completely. This ‘recipe of attributes’ was to create the basis of our new business …

In 1995 , Lucy and I opened the doors of our new specialist pine furniture store , A World Of Pine , in Salisbury . Perhaps the journey really started there. Somebody once told me ‘You don’t know what you don’t know ‘. And maybe as a ‘young couple ‘ setting up and running our own business being fully aware of what laid ahead might of some what dampened our enthusiasm. But as always we followed our hearts and looked for good I every situation we came across .

In those very early days we both needed to be so very sure of our objectives and aims and how we intended to meet them . It was soon very clear we needed to look after one another , then tend to our businesses every need … it would in turn look after us .

As I think back to those ‘foundation days ‘ the feelings of excitement and trepidation flood back . Moments of exhaustion, exhilaration and satisfaction filled our weeks . We were at that time ‘sure’ that our retail offering was very unique, but what we were not sure of was that the status quo would always favour us.

One thing we came to understand very fast is that it is so important to surround yourself with good people … It is the people who make the difference . Simon , our current Sales Director , literally strolled in off the street looking for holiday work whilst completing a university degree. He along with a couple of other notable AWOP personalities were the ‘original team’. Our team past and present deserves ‘greater attention’ no doubt deserving a future post ..

To this day Lucy and I still remember our original suppliers and manufacturers. It was a different world back in the ‘nineties’ compared to where we find ourselves now . Fortunately much of our product range was created here at home in the UK. The support we received from our suppliers was outstanding… Fantastic credit terms , fast delivery , trust and on many occasion ‘that personal touch ‘.

One occasion springs to mind which sums up how fantastically we were supported .One day back in earlier times , I had left Lucy in the store whilst I had gone off delivering for the day . Bear in mind the store was crammed with over three to four hundred pieces of furniture , was always pretty busy and Lucy was six months pregnant ! A delivery driver , Pete from Duckers Furniture turned up with his 40’ articulated lorry . We we were one of many customers he was due to visit that week . Unselfishly Pete offloaded our goods and spent some time with Lucy minding the store and offloading other deliveries . In those days folk had more on their agenda and Pete’s unselfishness went along way to turbo charging our enthusiasm. But let’s be clear he wasn’t the only one .

Our visitors and customers have always been amazing … But again back then many recognised a young couple trying to make a success of a new and flourishing business. One such customer was a very excitable and vivacious Mr Harper. On a Sunday afternoon over twenty years ago , Lucy and I were working in our Salisbury store busily selling and carrying out furniture to customers cars . Mr Harper , latterly know as Barry, sprung through our doors like someone who had just been given the keys to the ‘sweetie shop’ ! His enthusiasm and plaudits for our furniture and the store were more than memorable ! Thankfully his enthusiasm was supported by his wallet !

So without wanting to simplify the complexities of setting up a new business we knew our objectives, relied on our ‘detail’ and surrounded ourselves with good people.

Our philosophies have always fed in to our day to day regimes but they most certainly created a fantastic platform in those ‘early days’. I can remember Lucy’s grandfather visiting our first store in Salisbury and telling us “ Well done , you’ve really put on a show !”. A World Of Pine needed to be a specialist pine furniture destination run or managed by personalities who wanted to facilitate and make the buying process both easy and enjoyable.

Many of the philosophies and ethics we embedded in the business twenty five plus years ago still remain .

Many people ask me for my opinion on e-commerce and it’s relationship with furniture sales. My answer is simple and clear “I am yet to see any retailer completely satisfy it’s customer base through the online sales platforms “.
