Oh I do like to be beside the sea side….January 18th, 2012

Well on the fringes at least. Yesterday I visited one of our main suppliers of solid wood furniture, Devonshire Furniture. Over the past twenty years like us they have gone from strength to strength delivering quality solid wood furniture across the uk. Situated in Bideford, Devon, it’s perhaps not the best location for logistics but for quality of life and with views to inspire… what better place to run a business.

The reason for the visit was to preview some new ranges that are to be shown at the furniture show in Birmingham next week. Perhaps they thought the availability of free booze at the show would send us off course and we wouldn’t get to their stand to see their exciting new products… Peter, Andy & Tony… ye of little faith!!!

I almost didn’t make the preview though, I’m not going to name drop but German engineering could have done with some Japanese electronics!!! Approaching Barnstable on the duel carriageway the whole dash  lit up like a Christmas tree and the wipers were going berserk. I pulled in, turned off the engine, gave it a minute and started up again… all was fine. That’s mended then?! Great, on with the journey.

Devonshire Furniture’s ability to manufacture quality pine and painted furniture, along with their massive warehousing to stock imported oak ranges is a winning combination and allows us as a retailer to showcase a wide range of top quality products from a reliable source. We get our stock fast and because of the stock we turn over we get good discounts and pass these onto our customers. It’s this ethos that has kept our business thriving, even in these turbulent and challenging times. But, great prices and stock availability is not the key to successful long term business. You need to have products the public want and to bend and twist with fashions and trends.

So back to the new ranges I pre-viewed. There was a mix of solid oak and some painted ranges. The oak products will be available in various finishes, a real bonus. The painted ranges will have a vast pallet and options include oak trim.  Are they well priced, yes. Are they on trend, yes. Are they in stock…  well two out of three isn’t bad. From April the stock will start to roll and at that point we will champion the new ranges from Devonshire Furniture. They will be well priced, well stocked and on trend…

As Punch says… ‘That’s the way to do it!!!’

Bushcraft dayDecember 10th, 2011

Bushcraft day arrived a little quicker than I had envisaged, it must be me but the days really are just whizzing by (someone told me that’s just me getting older – how very dare they!), it was a very early, chilly start but well worth rising from my pit for even if it was just to take in the breath taking vista of stars that welcomed me as I stumbled out of the front door!

Having successfully navigated my way to the darkest corner of  Somerset I awaited the arrival of the posse, Alan (Blandford), Simon (Poole), Lenn (Salisbury), John (of cabinet making fame), Mike (Harnham Press) and of course not forgetting Mark and Sam of Countrylore, the guys that were to share their knowledge of all things Bushcraft like.

On their arrival we were ushered to the main camp (well actually the posse walked – I cheated and caught a lift on the back of Marks quadbike ……ooh how daring!) where we found Sam diligently chopping up some timber next to the camp that he and Mark had erected the night before, fire blazing, kettle on, it all looked rather cosy and so with a coffee in hand thinking – how hard can this be – we all sat down for Mark to give us a brief insight into the world of Bushcraft.

So having covered the basics it was off to start making our shelter, no mean feat when it is for 6 guys all of whom are of a rather large persuasion…… but we fired off in all directions gathering the necessary building materials to construct what can only be described as a giant beaver lodge…. just without the water.

We were all slightly alarmed as to how this experience was going to unfold though when Mark, before departing to gather some equipment, told us the procedure for treating any accidental knife wounds, not this not so bad in itself, but then continued with what to do if you have any chest or high thigh wounds – I still wonder what on earth he thought we were going to get up too, has he had an event that has turned into The Lord of The Flies!!

The new crib

So the shelter was created, although Mark did point out there were a few holes in the construction, but looking back on it it any self respecting shelter should have windows…..

And so to the fire starting, this had taken the attention of a few of us well into the course of the build of the shelter and there was a dogged determination to firing it up, but it seemed that all of our attempts were in vain, the majority of us gave up the cause early on and carried on with the build, but John and Mike continued with the thankless task and at one point amongst much whooping and holleri….. oh it had gone out again!!

Now Mark had mentioned in the breifing something called Alfreds Cake (not that cake…) a small fungi that grows on the trunks of decaying trees and that is excellent for fire lighting and so I popped of to see if I could find any, half an hour later I was thinking, am I looking in the right place, is it seasonal and so I was forced to ask – where would I find such an elusive thing?

It turns out that the Ash tree’s that I should have been looking for do not grow in that particular wood ….. Doh!! But I think Mark took pity on us and donated some of his stash and within moments we had a roaring fire going – time for some lunch!!

Cooking is so easy at home pop to the shops, grab some essentials, pop it on the cooker when you get home, it is all so incidental, a bit of a nuisance, but preparing this was so much more satisfying, Trout and Partridge were on the menu and although we did not have to catch our lunch (I do hope that is part of the next outing…) we did have to prepare it for cooking and with a quick demo from Mark it was time to get our hands dirty.

After our superb lunch of ponassed Trout and Partridge curry (Lenn is a culinary genius on the quiet!) Mark gave us a quick tour of our surroundings and a brief insight into the world around us, although I go for walks all of the time and feel that I “see” everything around me in reality I miss everything, sure I can name a few common trees and recognise a few plants (and this is a hugely limited knowledge compared to some..) but it is also about the mechanics of the woodland and countryside around us that we pretty much ignore and it is a shame that we are all trapped in a modern world of convenience and do not get the time to really appreciate what is out there.

To end the day there was a spot of spoon making, now this may sound to you like a frivolous task but it is  it is a proud moment when you stand there with this hand carved item in front of you, freshly whittled from a lump of Birch, there were varying degrees of success with the spoons but this just capped off the enormous sense of achievement from all of the tasks that we had partaken in throughout the day.

This was the first moment that I really understood quite how passionate Mark is about Bushcraft, his passion is born of same drive and determination that has created A world of furniture, but this has a little something else entirely and once you have been through a day like this it is easy to see why you would get passionate about it, although we have merely scratched the surface of the immense subject of Bushcraft, once you have experienced a small amount, it is a hard thing to shake off and I for one certainly would like to learn more and by god there is a huge amount to learn!

I hope it is not too long before we can have our next expedition, although there is another couple of outings planned for some of the other store staff, (I hope to get something on here from those particular trips) but I know that there are a couple of people from this trip that are keenly keeping an eye out for the next excursion……

Party!!!December 4th, 2011

My journey into A world of furniture was very arduous this morning (although thankfully my wife volunteered her services!) and I am quite surprised that I am able to type this, because, if it is at all possible, it feels like someone has actually unscrewed the top of my head and is now tap dancing on my brain…… and whom ever it is is doing this funky little jig is wearing particularly heavy clogs.

Yes it was the annual Christmas get together for all of us folk here at A world of furniture and there are one or two people that are not feeling all that great (myself being one….why does that telephone have to ring soooo loudly) but as you rightly say it is all self inflicted and no, none of us should get any sympathy.

The Lazy Cow in Salisbury was the destination for this years event a great little venue that I believe has not been open all that long but if you get an opportunity to go then do not miss it.

This year like the many before it was an absolute belter and it is great to meet up with the posse from the other stores, there are some pictures but I have to say that unfortunately they have not come out all the great and therefore they will not be appearing on here (a collective sigh of relief no doubt!), a couple of new faces too for this year in the form of Alex (Poole) and Andy (Blandford) who I hope after seeing their colleagues in the state that they were will not put them off too much in continuing the journey with A world of furniture!

I popped down to our local shop (and yes they do have special things……) to grab some miracle “cure all hangover” snacks and the lady behind the counter commented on my being slightly worse for wear (I didn’t think I looked that bad!)  ”… that’s good, many companies don’t hold Christmas do’s for their staff any more.” and having contemplated her remark I had to say that we as a company are blessed by having an absolutely fantastic guy in charge of the whole operation.

He will not thank me for popping this on here as he is of modest character (some will say slightly eccentric verging on odd….but that’s a different topic entirely!) but he is without doubt a superb boss/owner/entrepreneur and on behalf of all of us at A world of furniture I would like to say a big thank you for giving us yet another great end of year knees up……. but, and not that I am being ungrateful here, next year you can keep the hangover!

Christmas is coming …. didn’t you hear?November 24th, 2011

Yes that’s right folks Christmas is just around the corner and don’t we know it….. no sooner had the embers of bonfire night finally extinguished than a flood of advertising on the box proclaiming the latest in toys, gadgets and buy one get 15 cases of lager deals, although to be fair to the industry lets give a big shout out to the many hostelries who were giving their all back in October – a local establishment close by even had a Christmas tree up …… in October!!

Phew….. that’s that over with until next year, I do feel a lot better now yes, thank you.

The real reason for this post though is to bring to your attention another group of people that will have mixed feelings over the coming weeks towards that of Christmas cheer, with things so tough financially for a lot of people with unexpected redundancy, family bereavement or other bad misfortune over the last year or even longer.

There are an estimated 13 million people in this country who live below the poverty line and there are, because of financial constraints or just plain ignorance, not that many organisations to give help when it is needed in our own back yard.

This is where organisations like the Trussell Trust come in to play, founded in 1997 by Carol and Paddy Henderson with a legacy left by Carol’s mother Betty Trussell, the initial aim was to help children in Bulgaria who were living in squalid conditions but this soon expanded into the UK after a fund raising event in Salisbury highlighted problems within our own shores.

After investigating the problem of local deprivation and hunger Paddy decided to start a food bank within the confines of his garden shed, providing 3 days of emergency food to Salisbury people in crisis, by 2004 a UK Foodbank was launched with the idea of teaching community groups nationwide how to set up their own foodbanks.

Today the foodbank has reached tens of thousands of people across the country who find themselves in crisis and its Community Enterprises provide vital funds as well as volunteering opportunities for people of all backgrounds and abilities, all this while still maintaining The Trussell Trust’s House of Opportunity Programme which is the only project of its kind working to help Bulgaria’s orphanage leavers to build successful futures free from crime, prostitution and drug abuse

As I said at the beginning of this post there are many in the country that will have mixed feelings towards that of Christmas for various reasons but I hope that they will have a slightly merrier Christmas with the help that they will receive from the Trussell Trust.

This year as we did for last A world of furniture will do its best to provide a little assistance in delivering some food parcels before the season of goodwill and it is a very humbling experience.

It is easy sometimes to be wrapped in a cocoon of self indulgence with ideas of spending our cash and getting in the plumpest bird for the table, which I do not chastise anyone for, but it is nice to be able to take time out of our usual day to day shenanigans and make an effort in giving something to a community that will get largely overlooked.

If you would like to find out more about the Trussell Trust or would like to donate some something then have a look at their website.

Snow!!! Sledging!!! Anticipation of the white stuff…November 19th, 2011

This is what we think about here at A world of furniture – Snow and sledging – we do get very over excited about it all and no less so as the years go by, indeed I think this just increases our appetite for all things white, cold, snowy and of course sledge like.
This is why this year A world of furniture has decided to go one step beyond (slipping into my youth here – Baggy Trousers anyone…) the trappings of a normal furniture store and provide the nation with……. well how do you fancy a sledge?

Yes that’s right  in a couple of days time we will be the proud purveyor of the finest sledges this side of Norway, ready for the winter to hit us again but this time you will be prepared with a bit of sledging greatness.

Presenting the Davos Rodel sledge the ultimate in traditional sledging,  they are a stunning bit of sledge technology with galvanised steel runners held to the solid beech frame giving the best in super fast gliding and easy steering with the added steel foot bar at the front ready to accept your own choice of guidance equipment in the form of string, rope or finest twine whichever is your preference.

Davos Rodel 110 Sledge

This has got to be one of the best presents that you could get (I am personally hoping that Santa be kind enough to slip one into my Christmas stocking..) and it is built to last a life time, so if you have a thing for sledging (come on be honest…) and would like to get your mittened mitts on one then pop into any one of our stores in a few days or reserve one now, go on they are only £79 and then you can wait in eager anticipation for that white fluffy stuff to start falling!

Fresh News From The Poole StoreNovember 18th, 2011

Here in the Poole store we have had a freshen up and move around with our Newland Oak, Rustic Oak, Vancouver Oak and the new Massive Oak Ranges. And they are now all looking better than ever! So make sure you pop in and see the spoils of our efforts. With all these brilliant Solid Oak and Solid Pine ranges ready to take away, it would be a shame to miss out.

Vancouver Oak FurnitureNovember 12th, 2011

Vancouver Oak furniture is one of the best ranges that A world of furniture has seen over the last couple of years and it has certainly been a hit with customers too!

The Vancouver oak range is imported by Besp-oak furniture and made from American White oak and European oaks with a light oiled finish that gives it a rustic yet natural charm.

The oiled finish is ideal as it allows for a bit of refurbishment at a later date should it need it, if you refer to this page on this blog it gives details of how to look after the Vancouver Oak furniture

It comprises of new and reclaimed oak which further enhances the rustic nature of this particular range, dovetailed joints are used for all of the drawer boxes and tongued and grooved panels are featured on the the back panels.

The manufacturers have given the Vancouver Oak range further detail by lightly rounding off the corners and by using nice chunky tops to all of the pieces, this creates a sturdy yet good looking piece of furniture that will sit well in any room or indeed any house style.

With a large selection of items available they cover most areas of the home with particular attention to dining and occasional furniture, the collection of Vancouver Oak dining tables is second to none with 5 different sizes available – 1 fixed top 1800 x 1000mm and 4 extending versions – 1400 which extends to 1800mm, 1800 extending to 2300mm,  1900 which extends to 2540 and finally a 2200 extending to 2700…… all of the extending tables have butterfly leaf extensions, these are neatly folded into the centres of each table with the two ends sliding over the top to conceal them inside, so no need to find somewhere else to store them!

As you can see from these images the Vancouver Oak range is then perfectly finished off with the metal handles on the drawers and knobs on the doors which give it that traditional feel.

This is a great looking and substantial chunky oak range that will sit well in most homes and will be enjoyed for many years to come and with the majority of this range in stock you could have it nestled in your own home within days of ordering, so what are you waiting for – give us a call and two strapping lads could be whisking some out of the delivery van and into your castle well in time for your festive gatherings!!

….and another thingNovember 5th, 2011

Well Autumn is now upon us and there is a definite chill in the air, but it really is my favourite time of year, leaves start to turn those gorgeous Autumnal colours, the slightly chillier start to the mornings warded off by wrapping up snuggly and rain…. well for the most part its a great season!

So its been a little while since we last popped anything on here so I thought it was about time to have a quick ramble and such a lot has happened in the last couple of months.

Dale Farm has obviously been big on the agenda, it has cost so far in excess of 18 million quid to try and evict these “travellers”, well spent, probably not, but I have to say that if these guys want to put down some roots and build themselves a little community then who are we to stop them…..

If they would like to then contribute to society and pay their way, adhere to the rules and laws that we are all guided by, stop treating those around them with the contempt they do, then sure, why not give them the benefit of the doubt and let them keep their little enclave, but until then they deserve to be treated in the same way as everyone else.

I do believe it was not all that long ago that a farmer (and tax payer) built a very expensive house without planning but it did not take 10 years of legal ranglings to demolish it and make him homeless….and I am sure he is not the only one.

Also in the news Colonel Gaddafi after 40+ years of tyrannical rule has been summarily executed…. oh I mean accidently shot, or as the all new democratic council said “he was like that when we got here…”.

The UN informed us that they will be doing an investigation, with the aim of doing what – marching in on Serte and demanding that the population go to bed with no tea as they have all been very bad, because the alternative of arresting people and putting them on trial (for doing what the West did to Saddam..) is not a far cry from doing what the dictator was doing before.

I did love the reaction of the USA’s Nanny Hilary Clinton though – simply “wow….” – sums it all up really, they will probably make a film of it next year, but I suspect that she will show a little more interest when the “For Sale” sign goes up around the vast oil wealth that the Libyans have in their possession.

Of course there was the summer of love, however unlike it’s 60′s predecessor rioting seemed to top the bill at this particular event,  but it was the shooting of Mark Duggan that sparked it all off, this lovable rogue who would not say boo to a goose was fatally shot by the police….. doing a covert operation against gun crime……

It then digressed into the younguns (god, I am getting old now!) out in force complaining about…… well pretty much everything, and the reasons behind the beginning of this explosion of unrest were soon lost as people across the country joined in the fun and started some good ol fashioned arson with a dash of looting and friendly rumble with the ol bill.

I think some of them, trying to look slightly intelligent (hoodie up, face mask adorned, petrol bomb in hand), tried to pin this great event on the yoof being ignored by the geezers in charge, that the usual excuse of nothing to do, no jobs ‘n’ that, cuts to free hand outs to students were reason enough to go looting, pillaging and destroying the very businesses trying to put tax money into the system that supports them, an excellent way of helping your plight and making the general population stand tall and support you in your cause….

On a lighter note we had the rugby world cup …. oh yes I forgot….. we lost..

Michael Schumacher is in the buildingJuly 31st, 2011

Yes it is true …. we have a budding Schumacher here at A world of furniture in Chandlers Ford …. well I say a Schumacher – more like half a dozen who think they are!

Yes this was our trip to the local go-karting circuit for our little 1st Birthday celebration (yes it’s been one whole year here at the new store in Chandlers Ford – time certainly flies!) and everyone was giving it large before the event, giving advice to all who would listen about the best way to take the hairpins, the fastest approach to the bridge or the quickest way to negotiate the S Bends.

But the night itself told us all we needed to know about the capabilities of our budding Schooeys and it was a revelation.

I went out like a man on a mission to show everyone at the start the way forward and obviously show the best way round the track – the pace setter if you will …. and I thought that I had posted a fairly respectable time that was until Mr Kiddle decided otherwise…

He slid out the back end of his kart with great aplomb and like a pro he soon smashed my lap, which at the end of his stint was only too pleased to tell me, (obviously what goes on on the track stays on the track with no consequences back at base ….. ;) ) his gloating soon turned to dismay however when Katie took to the track.

With a racing style that is only just short of demented, every time someone dared over take her on the circuit they would soon have the taste of a woman scorned as Kate would proceed to ram them into the nearest tyre wall and somehow come out on top, but it was amongst much whooping and hollering that we informed Kate that she had in actual fact knocked Ben from his top spot and pinched the fastest lap, this was obviously not helped by us all mocking him!

Then it was the turn of Martin who started out the cautious type, carefully taking the corners and steady on the straight, but it did not take too long before there was the merest hint of contact with his kart and he then turned into a man possessed it was like seeing a bull on the charge, eyes fixed on the targets in front of him and a demonic grin plastered to his face he proceeded to chase down everything in his path, trying to get him back in to the pits for a change over proved difficult, only just falling short of throwing someone on the track in front of him and I am not sure that would have worked – I just hope to god he does not drive the van like that on Monday!

When we finally did manage to retrieve Martin from his possessed mission it was the turn of Charles, who it has to be said is a bit of a dark horse when it comes to karting, one can only take from his style that he was the one responsible for leaving tyre marks on the car parks of many a shopping centre across the south, (as the back end of his kart was usually overtaking him!) a bit of a boy racer in his time now doubt, however the penultimate lap saw near disaster, a clinical lead into the corner, a slight under take on the exit and blam! Charles is now buried into the tyre wall….. well … he had a sterling race for the most part!

There are already rumblings of revenge on the next outing, I see that Schumacher’s early karting videos have recently been played on Youtube and the circuit map is now pinned to the notice board for a constant reminder and review of those corners and how best to tackle them …. little do they know I have already booked another session to keep up the practice ….. …..

Made to measure furniture – no problem!July 15th, 2011

Ever had a job getting something to fit and thought that made to measure furniture was just too expensive….. well as always  A world of furniture have the solution!

A world of furniture have so many manufacturers under our belts, Besp-oak, Devonshire Pine, Phoenix Wood Furniture, Tellow Furniture Design, Habasco, Woodpecker Furniture, On Reflection, CPW, to name a few, it is easy to forget that even with all of these furniture manufacturers at our disposal and their huge selection of ranges there is  always something that they don’t do and this is where some shining examples of what is good about the furniture industry and English manufacturing step forward with their ability to conjure up some fine pieces of made to measure furniture.

We received this morning a couple of examples of this made to measure furniture in all its glory from a couple of lesser known but fantastic manufacturers based in the UK – I know its hard to believe but we still do manufacture something after all!

The first example was an oak cabinet with adjoining bookcase from a company called Phoenix Wood Furniture (based just outside Bath) and it was truly gorgeous – I know – this statement is  probably a little ott but it is…. well…… gorgeous…. so there.

I mean you have to see it to believe it, a large 2 door cupboard with internal shelving joined to an open bookcase with adjustable shelves, now you probably think that there is nothing really remarkable about this but when you see the quality of the craftsmanship then you will really appreciate the work that went into it, you see the bookcase is a lot shallower than the cupboard by well over a foot….

This has meant that a special L – shaped plinth had to be designed along with the same shape for the cornice sitting atop of the whole thing, it really is a work of art and gives you a nice rosy feeling inside when it is then successfully installed into the customers home and this really needed installing,  Martin and Ben the delivery team certainly had to squeeze it in, it was as snug as they get, gently wrapping around the awkward shape of the wall, with only millimetres to spare at the top.

But Phoenix Wood Furniture are not the only ones, there is another company called On Reflection (strange name as they have never made mirrors….) based down the road in Rye.

We have dealt with Les and the team at On Reflection for many years and they have crafted a few hundred made to measure pieces over the years for us and it seems so common place to do that you really forget that the items coming through is made to measure furniture at all especially considering the prices which are usually within a couple of pounds of the standard item that has been used for the basis of the alteration.

The piece they sent us this week was a great (in the picture above) little single door two drawer wardrobe with an accompanying bookcase made to the same height, very simple, very practical, great price, what more do you need, as the cheeky little meerkat says – simples!

These are just a couple of examples of the made to measure furniture but there is much more that can be achieved by these companies and others like them, so the next time you think that you would like a little something for the gap under the stairs or for that awkward little niche in the kitchen or even a slightly wider oak TV cabinet for your new widescreen Plasma purchase then give us a call and a nice piece of made to measure could be winging it’s way to you sooner than you think.
