Medullary Rays

Sunday, May 13th, 2012

On many occasions when we have made a delivery there is on occasion a reference to strange silvery lines, stripes or discolouration in the oak, as a customer once commented “….. it looks as though something has been spilt on it.” we then have a lengthy discussion about Medullary Rays.

These Medullary Rays ,lines or stripes are also referred to as Pith Rays or Wood Rays and are a characteristic found in most woods but are most striking in hard woods such as Oak.

Medullary Rays

They are formed by the build up of primarily Parenchyma cells which allow the radial transmission of sap from the heart of the tree to the outer and are an essential process of Tylosis which is essentially the tree protecting itself from any foreign invaders as it expands.

Anatomy of a tree.

When the boards of timber are then cut from the trunk usually quater sawn these rays are roughly perpendicular the surface of the board giving the beautiful affect of the silvery wisps running through the grain, which just adds to the  great character of the wood.

So the next time that you see some silvery flecks, or strange silver “Tiger stripes” running through the grain, there is nothing wrong with it, in fact quite the reverse, Medullary Rays are a great sign that what you are buying is exactly what it says on the tin solid real wood that will last you for many years.

Made to measure furniture – no problem!

Friday, July 15th, 2011

Ever had a job getting something to fit and thought that made to measure furniture was just too expensive….. well as always  A world of furniture have the solution!

A world of furniture have so many manufacturers under our belts, Besp-oak, Devonshire Pine, Phoenix Wood Furniture, Tellow Furniture Design, Habasco, Woodpecker Furniture, On Reflection, CPW, to name a few, it is easy to forget that even with all of these furniture manufacturers at our disposal and their huge selection of ranges there is  always something that they don’t do and this is where some shining examples of what is good about the furniture industry and English manufacturing step forward with their ability to conjure up some fine pieces of made to measure furniture.

We received this morning a couple of examples of this made to measure furniture in all its glory from a couple of lesser known but fantastic manufacturers based in the UK – I know its hard to believe but we still do manufacture something after all!

The first example was an oak cabinet with adjoining bookcase from a company called Phoenix Wood Furniture (based just outside Bath) and it was truly gorgeous – I know – this statement is  probably a little ott but it is…. well…… gorgeous…. so there.

I mean you have to see it to believe it, a large 2 door cupboard with internal shelving joined to an open bookcase with adjustable shelves, now you probably think that there is nothing really remarkable about this but when you see the quality of the craftsmanship then you will really appreciate the work that went into it, you see the bookcase is a lot shallower than the cupboard by well over a foot….

This has meant that a special L – shaped plinth had to be designed along with the same shape for the cornice sitting atop of the whole thing, it really is a work of art and gives you a nice rosy feeling inside when it is then successfully installed into the customers home and this really needed installing,  Martin and Ben the delivery team certainly had to squeeze it in, it was as snug as they get, gently wrapping around the awkward shape of the wall, with only millimetres to spare at the top.

But Phoenix Wood Furniture are not the only ones, there is another company called On Reflection (strange name as they have never made mirrors….) based down the road in Rye.

We have dealt with Les and the team at On Reflection for many years and they have crafted a few hundred made to measure pieces over the years for us and it seems so common place to do that you really forget that the items coming through is made to measure furniture at all especially considering the prices which are usually within a couple of pounds of the standard item that has been used for the basis of the alteration.

The piece they sent us this week was a great (in the picture above) little single door two drawer wardrobe with an accompanying bookcase made to the same height, very simple, very practical, great price, what more do you need, as the cheeky little meerkat says – simples!

These are just a couple of examples of the made to measure furniture but there is much more that can be achieved by these companies and others like them, so the next time you think that you would like a little something for the gap under the stairs or for that awkward little niche in the kitchen or even a slightly wider oak TV cabinet for your new widescreen Plasma purchase then give us a call and a nice piece of made to measure could be winging it’s way to you sooner than you think.

Oak furniture – where is the Oak sourced?

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011

A world of furniture prides itself of looking after the environment and no more so when looking at where the oak in our furniture is sourced.

This was a question that crops up every now and then and so I thought it about time that I popped it on here and give a brief answer to this question.

The magnificent oak tree

We have, from most of our suppliers of oak furniture (many of whom also supply us with other types of furniture), received their copy of the FSC certification of sustainably sourced timber, which although not fool proof is a huge step towards making sure the oak furniture A world of furniture sells is constructed out of oak from well managed forests.

The oak itself is harvested far and wide, with the majority predominantly from America and eastern Europe. European oak Castanea sativa (European Chestnut) is used a little less now as most managed forests are reducing the amount taken to increase the availability in the future and allow the Oak to achieve maturity in larger numbers.

American White Oak Castanea dentata (American Chestnut) the most popular choice at the moment and there is a huge abundance of this to be found in Canada and East America, it is a faster growing species of oak that is found here and so the impact is felt slightly less than other species, the Castanea crenata (Japanese Chestnut) for instance.

But as I said earlier it is not fool proof and everyone at A world of furniture knows that with the business that they are in it is good to try and underline any efforts from our suppliers with a little effort ourselves.

That is why we sponsor the Forestry Commission directly paying for a tree to be planted every time we sell a piece of oak furniture, pine furniture, leather sofa, mango bookcase, Teak bench…. well you get the idea, for every piece of furniture that we sell – we plant a tree and to date we have planted over 35,000, I know I should have said that to start with, would have been quicker!

Where do we deliver?

Saturday, June 4th, 2011

This is a question that keeps on cropping up and so here is the definitive answer – anywhere……

Yes, that’s right folks if you would like us to deliver it and you live on the Isle of White or in the Lake District, you have a holiday let in North Cornwall or even in York we can get it to you, yes, there is a delivery charge, but when you consider that our local delivery charge is just £10 and local delivery is up to 20km away from each of our  stores, it gives you an idea of how little it could be.

We also pride ourselves in giving a great service, it is not just door to door, we will take all of the items into the room of your choice, unwrap the furniture, take away all of the packaging and if a wardrobe needs dismantling to get it up the stairs the delivery team will be happy to do it, pop the legs on your table – no problem, ask them to build your bed and the answer will most likely be a cheeky one, usually mentioning tea and biscuits!!

We do have some limitations, the moon is a bit out of the way as yet and we don’t assemble bunk beds or cabin beds, but I think you will agree that what we do provide is the best in the business, I know that’s bragging just a bit but, well, a bit of trumpet blowing is acceptable once in a while…..
